Kris-Kindle 2016

The demographic of KK is changing. The first of the third generation will soon pass the age of consent and more importantly for all the aunts and uncles, the age when he qualifies for Christmas and birthday presents. It's good to have one less to think about before any more turn up.

KK therefore has a new member, who cannot be defined as a couple. Therefore we are back to individuals. One can only assume that also those who were mad enough to marry into the Family are included (for the first time on their own 2 feet) and that long term partners who live under the same roof are also in for the first time on there own.

So, please correct me if I am wrong, but this years KK is made up of the following.

2 Grandparents.
5 Siblings
2 Husbands
2 Wives
1 Partner
1 Grand Child.

Probably just as well that we've kicked off a few weeks earlier than last year. There should be time for lots of fun and games as people give their cryptic or otherwise clues. The best news is that I already know what I want......

As ever some hints about what the other nieces and nephews would like are also highly appreciated.

Woohoo, I'm the first to leave a comment! Yes VL, that looks about right.....a lot more than when we started the KK! Now to get my thinking cap on!Also 1 Grandchild needs a nick name...I know how about Grandchild 1!!!!Or can anyone come up with anything better!

This morning, as we wake to the news that the USA has finally gone completely off the rails, I hope that my present wish can re-assure that there are a few good things that have come out of the states over the years, and on this occasion I don't mean snap-on tools.

Certain things that happen, things you see, things you experience, things that are created, things that are popular become a part of memories that will always be with you. This is expecially true for your most informative years, just as KK's youngest member will no doubt look back and realise in the years ahead.

My KK wish relates to one such memory. If my Kris Kindle happens to be in their 40's then no doubt this present wish will also awake certain memories within them. If my KK is under the age of 30 or over 70 then they probably won't have a clue what I am banging on about!!

My wish started to take shape as early as 1980, I was just 5 years old. However, my wish came to be 16 years later, (scarily) 25 years ago. I was in 5th year in Midleton college and I am pretty sure to say this was a defining memory for so many of the younger generation at that time.

Sites, Sounds, Smells, People, Places all come rushing back to me as I write this......

If you thing that I am being vaugue and criptic, don't worry, it will get worse before it gets better...... But as ever in the end, I know exactly what I would like and I will give enough information so that my KK will be in no doubt and can decide if this is what they get me or if they go for something completely different...

Criptic guesses are welcome and will be answered with a clue if they are in the right direction.

Wow VL, you are in flying form today!
Did this thing that you speak of so highly originally require a biro to fix it or am I on the wrong track completely!?

Viking Longship said...

I'll blame the lack of sleep, but I actually had to think quite hard and rewind many years before I worked out what (I am pretty sure) you are on about.

Now I am quietly chuckling to myself and thinking that should my KK be 18 years old, he will still have absolutely no clue. Oh the good old days, it's all too easy now.

Mum of less than half said...

Well, blast it. I was hoping to be first on the blog. But anyway Congratulations to BLS or LBS on being so quick on the button. I think Grandchild 1 is somewhat clumsy. Perhaps he would like to choose his own name.

I haven't a clue what I want yet and I equally, being nearly over 70, haven't a clue what VL is on about. All I can remember from his years in Midleton College was that he collected electrical goods, radios, tills, tape recorders etc and dismantled them all over the floor in the top bedroom. Oh yes and of course there was the ZX81 connected to the tv screen which somehow and very discretely then got connected to the aeriel and was being watched. In order not to pay a fine we (very discretely) then bought a license. Then the darn thing made its way downstairs and by our silver wedding became a huge screen and video box and we watched it ourselves. I have to qualify that. Our Father had the zapper...............

Anyway here's wishing all our KKs happy blogging and lots of fun.

Bls or is it lbs (All that matters is I'm the one that is in the decade previous to 30)...Just about! said...

Right well I being in the under 30 category (just about) don't have a clue what any of you are on about.

I do however know that is all I want for Christmas is the keys to my first home and a "raven pub". If you have any idea what our hopeful future holds then you will understand the various uses I would have for a "raven pub"

More clues to follow

Anonymous said...

I thought that a raven pub was only needed when you don't have the keys to a house.

LBS (aka the shorter one) said...

Oh dear, all I can work out from that is that BLS wants a BRAVE PUN!

Bls or is it lbs (All that matters is I'm the one that is in the decade previous to 40)...Just about! said...

My BRAVE PUN may well be used to break down a door or two, just not the front door. B.I.L II fears that my destructiveness will not be kept contained. What I demolish he will rebuild :-D

Viking Longship said...

I am not sure what exactly BLS DOB>1980 and B.I.L. II plans are, but I think that those of us who have been through similar challenges can confirm that the time spent ripping apart and gutting is exponentially related to the time spent putting it all back together.

So, whilst using a Paven Rub may be great fun, take it a little easy and think about the poor sod who has to put it all back together again.

Anonymous said...

BLS DOB after 1980 and BIL II don't need a Raven Pub or a Brave Pun or a Paven Rub, nor even an Envup Bar, No, what you need is a Crab row. That would be far more handy. Take my word for it!

Anonymous said...

Don't you mean a war crob, or am I confused?

Bls or is it lbs (All that matters is I'm the one that is in the decade previous to 40)...Just about! said...

A war crob is the same as a raven pub....just so you know.

Then again maybe your referring to a hook pigger when you say crab row then you have pre empted my 2nd request for Christmas.

The shorter one said...

I'm really stuck as to what a raven pub is and as for a hook pigger...haven't a clue. But VL, were you by any chance at Slane in 1995? We need to work this out before we're out of time!!

Mum of less than half said...

On further reflection I think it's to do with things that move. That at 5 VL knew he wanted to drive and by 5th year he was. Getting any closer?

Still waiting for Grandchild No 1 to let us know if he wants to be High Speed Harry or High up in the air or what?

I'm still thinking........

Viking Longship said...

The Shorter On, Grandma is way off, but now I've said too much.

Viking Longship said...

So, BLS DOB>1980 has been very precise and The Shorter One has hit the nail on the head. Not meaning to pry, barring those who are unable, could everyone who has not yet started the process of hinting please get going.

Now, for my wish, I've everything to show, I've everything to hide. TSO has already cracked it and I am guessing that about 50% of the KK will easily get it. The rest, even with the hint of the century are half a world away and don't have a clue.

Some more specific details and instructions for my wish are as follows.

1: It is available on Amazon, the version that I wish for is a little over €50 if you buy direct from Amazon but you can select other sellers and there appears to be one that ships from the UK and should end up just under €50.
2: In addition to the original version there are 3 others, making 4 in total.
3: Please do not get it shipped directly to Norway. We will end up paying almost the same again in Import tax. We also get stung if it is marked as a gift but sent directly from supplier.
4: One option is to get it sent to the parents of almost half who can hand carry. I do not mind waiting.

Finally, TSO, I was not in Slane in 1995, but I was in Oslo on the 3rd of September 2008.

Our Father saith

(No subtle clues here - I'm clueless - sorry!)

A bit of poetry instead:

What I really would like
Is a light for my trike,
Not too cheap or tacky
but big and quite wacky.

It gets darker and wetter
So a big light is better,
With the finest bright beam
So all can be seen:

Can be seen from afar
Affixed handlebar,
Then safer I'd feel a-
Stride my three wheeler.

As present things stand
I ride, torch in one hand,
So it's no piece of cake
To stop with one brake.

Poor Calvin with me
Suddenly stops for a pee,
Gets a thump in mid-flow
From a trike I can't slow.

If this costs too much loot
I could do with a hoot
(Whilst acting the plonker
I broke my last honker)

I still have a bell
Which serves very well,
But I do like my toys
And a horn makes more noise.

So a light or a parper
Will please Unser Vater
As he rides through the night
On his trusty old trike.

Oh Daddy Bear you do make me laugh!

Alas I believe despite my youth I have figured out what VL wishes for :-) I was on the right track but confirmation came from none other than a comment by John Kidney on Siobhan Fordes FB page!

I have another request should the hook pigger and raven pub prove too confusing, this time a little less subtle.

For all this destruction I think I will need some decent overalls (I wear a size 12/medium), goggles of the non swimming sort, and perhaps a paint scraper.

Even if our hopeful home does fall through I am sure I will make good use of all of the above.

A clue:

As you all know, I have some exotic pets.
Now I have a new interest. Along a similar sounding vein.
A python is a rather fabulous and scary snake.
But give it a capital P and it becomes a way of talking.
Just like the python, the things I want to talk to have very little imagination.
But if you know the language, are capable of great things.

Becoming fluent in this strange and obscure way of speaking has entertained me through many a flight and coach journey. To places where people have names like Pierre, and Luciano and Jakob.

I need a book which I can read on a train to Essen, a flight to Shanghai or drinking coffee at Café Ramalho on the Piazza del Nettuno.

If someone could provide such a book, I could further my education in this strange tongue.

Clue: Follow the italics.

Mrs VL said...

Hi all,
Finally I have found some time to sit down and read through all your creative ways of presenting KK wishes. What I did not find amongst all the 31 comments were present wishes for all the 8 cousins of FBS, SBS and now TBS. And yes, I need for all eight, since we also catch up on/send birthday presents to three of them. Please post wishes ASAP. It is very hard to find time for present shopping and Christmas is approaching so fast - help!

Now then after making that request I guess it is only correct that I post wishes for our three boys. FBS and SBS has made some very long lists. Consult Mr. VL if you are at risk of sending anything that will give us a large custom bill.
FBS:
-A good, but not heavy bike lock. One with a code might be ideal so there is no key to be lost.
-Nerf (some kind of shooting toy I think)
-Air hogs atmosphere
-Monopoly ultimate banking
Lots of various Lego sets, some might require several people to buy together. For some I have only given the set number as finding translations are tedious. Ask if something does not make sense:
-70596
-42046
-60103
-All nexo knights new from June 2016
-All minecraft new from June 2016
-All ninjago new from June 2016
-All lego city volcano except 60122 and 60121
-Lego road plates

SBS:
-Pokémon folder and cards
-Playmobile
-Plus plus
-Book: How to raise and keep a dragon by John Topsell (this we really hope someone will get as we have renewed the loan of this favourite book from the library about 10 times).
-Other dragon books as well
-Hotwheels track (consult Mr. VL on what is desirable)
-Finger skateboard
Various Lego:
-Bionicle
-speed champions (not Chevrolet corvette)
-Marvel super heroes
-City: 60114, 60113, 60085, 60084
-Technic 42035
-Nexo knights: 70314, 70316

TBS has not written a list, and your guesses might be as good as mine, but here are some ideas:
-some new bath toys
-Brio train track bits
-Fisher price Little peoples and little wheelies
-FBS and SBS think he should wish for a toy smartphone or Ipad
-Fun books to both read and eat, incl. bath books

Phew...that was those lists, but now there may be someone out there wondering about my KK wish? Only one slightly cryptic message, and no poem will follow now, but there may be something another day? A couple of ideas I can give though, but on the other side I quite like being surprised, so feel free to choose something you think is suitable my KK. Norway plan to shut all the FM senders in 2017 (although now the labour party say they might try to stop this). I love listening to the radio in the car, but this could all end in 2017. I think the solution is over the budget, but maybe not? Can something be found that ensure I can still hear the news in 2017? Next, I love the calendar my last years KK gave me, but now I need a new one. It is made by BusyB.co.uk, called BusyB Family calendar, with monthly pockets and columns for 5 people. The pockets have been very useful:-). Another good thing would be an implement that chops nuts efficiently. It takes to long with a knife and chopping board. That's it for now!

Mrs The Other Cold One said...

Hello from this side of Europe, too! I have tried to think of my Kris Kindle wish but haven't managed to come up with anything suitable yet...

But somebody asked for hints for juniors.. So if anyone is still looking for ideas, here are some. Starting from the youngest...
M (size 110cm):
- Brio Builder bits
- Kids' quality water colours
- A fleece jacket (without a hood, so it fits easily under another jacket): size 110-116cm

T (size 125cm):
- A fleece jacket (also without a hood, reasons same as above) size 130 cm
- A microscope (could also be a joint pressie with little bro)
- A Star wars costume: Darth vader or something like it (size 8-10 years)

M (size 155cm):
- silver earrings
- 100% cotton towelling bath robe size 160cm (= a sauna robe... so it's kept in the sauna, put on when you're still wet (i.e. used as a towel), that's why the material is crucial. Look e.g.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cotton-Towelling-Hooded-Collar-Bathrobe/dp/B01HF0EDOQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1480884013&sr=8-3&keywords=bath%2Brobe%2Bchildren&th=1&psc=1
- a girls' top (size 160cm)

S (size nearly 170 cm):
- Some fairly new teens' book in English. She's read pretty much everything that has been translated into Finnish and quite a few in English too, so here are some hints of books that she hasn't read yet:
Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway;
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins;
If I stay by Gayle Forman
- A small outdoor survival kit e.g.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/edealing-Emergency-Survival-Multi-Function-Equipment/dp/B01MCQ92M4/ref=sr_1_4?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1480885751&sr=1-4&keywords=camping+equipment+sos
- dry bags for camping (I mean waterproof bags for putting your clothes in... which then go inside a rucksack)
- A quality sleeping mattress (for camping outdoors when it's cold.. e.g. one with thermal reflective barrier would be great
- Wooden knitting needles
- She'd also really love an Aran sweater... I don't know whether that would be something grandparents could maybe think of as a joint xmas & birthday pressie for her (?).. But I think she'd need to be involved in choosing it so you'd need to really discuss it with her. Maybe if she found some suitable models on the net as examples?

I hope these are helpful :-)

Lovely to hear from the other cold country...was beginning to wonder if there was anyone out there! Hee hee, I think Mrs VL has decided their family is definitely complete and to do something about it with that last request... watch out Mr VL!!!
Rof eht tser fo ym tneserp i dluow ekil a wen jigsaW...but if the budget can't stretch to that, something from Soap and Glory would be lovely.
A couple of ideas for my gang...FBD would like new ear phones,
SBS would be very happy with a new T-shirt or long sleeve top. He fits age 14 and is my height now (a bit slimmer tho!!)
TBS would love a lego cargo plane but if thats beyond the budget a smaller lego city set would be greatly appreciated, he hasn't got any of the newer releases.
Hope that helps a bit.. XX

Oh dear, what can the matter be,
My Kris Kingle must be oh so cross with me,
I haven't put out any sort of clue
As all my ideas out of the window flew!

However, tonight, I will make amends.
I have some ideas to set the trends
in place for shopping for me
as you will no doubt shortly see.

Just like Mr VL, my first request
was set in place when I was still a pest -
just 16 years old - and wonder of wonder
I still enjoy their music 54 years later.

So like BIL (the original) said
it's 'amaz"ing whats to be had
if you go and look for this or that
to make me very happy and contat!

(Sorry about the attempts at rhyme. I don't have the skill of the rest of you. It must have come from Our Father)

My first request - oh yes - Its
A Hard Day's Night 50 years on Dvd
My second request wait for it -
Eight Days a week the DVD (not the special edition, thanks).

My third request is some light reading.
The wicked wit of Queen Elizabeth II
and with it in a bundle Prince Philip Collection

Finally, if enough dough is left,
please may I have 'Old enough to know better,
Young enough not to care.'
I think that probably sums up my attitude to life!

So, dear KK,
I hope this isn't too difficult for you to cope with.
I shall have a great new year with all these goodies to keep me amused.........

Mrs TOCO said...

Now... I've eventually managed to come up with some alternative ideas for my Kris Kindle. I've put here quite a few different ideas but I would greatly appreciate quality over quantity so if you're wondering between buying one good one or two cheapish ones I'd prefer the former. All items should be available on Amazon which seems to be the cheapest way to post stuff here.

- A reasonably water resistant bum waist bag for hiking/running/cycling... (so that I can put my phone, keys and a bit of money there, no more room needed) e.g.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Dsports&field-keywords=bum+waist+bag

- Lawn Aerating Sandals
e.g
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Greenkey-Garden-and-Home-Ltd/dp/B001NUYLN8/ref=sr_1_3?s=outdoors&ie=UTF8&qid=1481314266&sr=1-3

- pair of moccasin slippers size 6
e.g.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ladies-Suede-Moccasin-Slippers-Cuff/dp/B006QV8M7A/ref=sr_1_2?s=shoes&ie=UTF8&qid=1481318348&sr=1-2&keywords=leather+slippers

- A book: The Complete Secrets of Happy Children: A Guide for Parents by Steve Biddulph

- A night dress (but I better let you know that I'm not wonderfully keen on pink or silly ones. And Mr TOCO adds that it shouldn't be "too grandmomish" either, whatever that means... Size 12 or medium would feel the most comfortable.

I hope you are able to find something suitable from here and which doesn't run up a huge postage bill -there seems to be quite a bit of variation between sellers and products (at least on Amazon) in terms of postage & packing fees.

Anonymous said...

Dear Mrs TOCO
Will it be a crisis if any of the items you have wished for are not looking just the same as on those amazon links as long as they are just as good or better quality?

Mrs VL said...

One more wish from me. I wonder if my KK person is able to get this "Torky on the go"? The web page I have found that sells this does not ship to Norway: http://www.torkyonthego.se/Catalog-Torky-On-The-Go_2.aspx We have one of those, and it is great, but it is very worn and mucky looking now. So can one of you
Decipher this clue?
Do I know what it is? I do not!

Now I could consult with VL
Who knows what it is quite well,
But all the same
He's forgotten the name,
So that's not much use - What the hell?

Or paddle away inland
On calm lakes in Finland.
Please, please be much much more specific.

If anyone is still wondering what else to get me (I realise I've only mentioned one thing so far) here is another couple books I'd quite like.

Cartoon Animation by Preston Blair

or:

Animation 1 by the same chap.

If you're wondering, I'm starting to write some very basic computer games and would love to be able to animate some basic characters. Probably good books for the more artistically minded children too.

They are called pogies: They're gloves which fit over the paddle of a kayak to keep your hands warm.

So ones which don't have too long a wrist section - this is a bit difficult to get in and out of, and increases the chance of falling in while performing this manouver. It's also worth remembering two things:

I'm using them when the air temperature is likely to be around or below zero, and this can get a lot colder when you factor in the wing chill. This year the first time I got on the lake there was still a fair bit of ice on it, so it's fairly cold.

I won't need them til April (at the moment the ice is already 8 cm thick) so won't be to worried if they don't get here for christmas...

So: Neoprene (maybe 3mm and fleece lined?) and with shortish wrist sections. Preferably ones that can be fitted tight to the shaft also...

Wind chill ... not wing chill...

Yes, Mrs TOCO, the book is for S's birthday and if you wouldn't mind wrapping it, that would be great.
Unfortunately, I accidentally sent S and M's christmas pressie to myself instead of you so will wrap that one and send it with Our Father and Mum of nearly half! Hope they won't mind getting it a bit late.

International man of music: I'm sorry but I cannot follow italics and think that it may have something do do with a classy british comedy act, and am in any case way to late to get stuff delivered by christmas... ho hum.

The other gifts you propose come in at under 25€ so I need a clear hint (preferably a link...)

My apologies in advance...

Dear Anonymous,

Could you not see the italics or were you not able to work it out?

The book I was looking for was Fluent Python by Luciano Ramalho

If you can get Amazon next day delivery you might get it here before Christmas but it really doesn't matter if you can't!

It still sounds like a British comedy situation...

'Do you speak fluent python?'

'No, I can assure this is not a dead parrot?'

'But I asked you about the python...'

'Yes, but I'm only a Lumberjack'

'He's a lumberjack and he's ok, he speaks fluent python...'

But I'll get the books and apologise in advance that I'm not quite up to speed. I'll make sure it arrives in time for xmas 2017!
