Summer Holiday Rota System (SHRS), a suggestion.

We discussed this briefly during the summer holiday in Cumbria and would like to go further on this idea, please discuss in the comments.

Why have a SHRS?

It will make it easier to reach a common decision each year, and it is good to be able to plan ahead. The Nicholls family is growing and communication about holiday plans can take a lot of time and effort.

What are the obligations?

It is great if as many as possible are able to join in on the common holiday, but it is entirely voluntary for an individual or a family. There should be a good reason for diverting from the rota one year, for example, somebody arranging a wedding with a desire for a common holiday in connection with this.

Specific responsibilities:

Those that live in a host country take the first initiative for arrangements that year. Those that do not live in neither Ireland, Finland or Norway are responsible for the “Other country” year (see below).

Here is the system:

It is based on the pattern since 2011 and we shall call it BISON.

B= Break year (2011)

I= Ireland (2012)

S= Finland (Soumi, since it makes a nice word!) (2013)

O= Other country (2014)

N= Norway

This means that it is Norway in 2015, and ahead the years will be like this:

2016 =B

2017= I

2018= S

2019= O

2020 = N

What now?

Comments and discussion please. Agree, Disagree, Don't know....

Hi everyone.
Here are my thoughts. I think a rota system is a great idea for ensuring ease of decision for family holidays....however I think we should consider making each holiday 2yrs apart. There's a risk that if we do it every year we will find that we can't get everyone together on any given year and this will dilute the specialness of these holidays. Or perhaps have a break year the year after a big two week holiday like last year.

What do others think?

I think its a good idea but agree with Clare, if we had a big family holiday every second year with a partial get together (but no pressure!) of whoever can make it in between. We wouldn't all be able to come this summer as DD has two weeks in Irish college and FBS may have athletics commitments and hopefully a summer job, but maybe myself, and the two younger boys could make it. We had been thinking bout a family holiday for 2016! Sorry that probably just makes things as clear as mud!!!
P.S Thank you so much Mr and Mrs VL for having our incredible hulk to stay. He had a great time and really enjoyed himself.

Thank you Viking Lonships for thinking ahead... we can't think beyond building issues at the moment...

I agree with BLS and kid sister. If we try to plan a proper family holiday every couple of years then it's more likely that more of us would be able to join it that year. Also partial get togethers are fine as you get that way actually more time to talk to the people you are with at that time.

I'm pretty sure that our finances won't strech to going anywhere this summer...

If we change the break year to 'Other' and replace the original 'Other' with England/UK we can still use this system with an every other year focus on higher expectation of participation. The name of the rota will not be so good, but that is secondary. Then I suggest that people living in England is responsible for first initiative that year, and for the 'other' year we have to come up with another system for who is responsible for organisation.

I would like to suggest simply that we should try to have a bigger family holiday every couple of years, but lets not make too definite rotas or plans. There are a lot of us and there may be bigger happenings that people want to get together if possible: big birthdays, confirmations, weddings (let's face it: D is already 16!), Christenings etc.
As long as we all communicate re: bigger plans and discuss options together then I'd believe it would work best. If we have a set rota it gets easily a bit limiting... It would be nice to think that the "family holiday proper" could take place in either one of the "host countries" or anywhere in Europe (France, Spain, England...)
But I understand that others may prefer having things planned much more firmly in advance.

Just to add my penny's worth which may not be seen by others as its rather later than the general discussion......

Now we know that there will be a family wedding next year in Ireland the rota will be spelling something different...
IBSON. Will that do?

Also Our Father and I are looking forward to a stay in a cottage some where in Norway this summer and will be delighted that some of next door will be there as well as the Vikings!
